Operation Avalanche: Canada Cracks Down on Crypto Scams

In March 2025, Canadian regulators and law enforcement agencies joined forces for Operation Avalanche, a coordinated effort to fight back against crypto scams. It was a campaign not only about catching criminals after they struck, but about intervening early, interrupting fraud as it progressed, and going directly to individuals most likely to be affected.

Approval Phishing

The campaign focused on a developing scam called approval phishing, which involves deceiving victims into giving fraudsters access to their crypto wallets without realising it. By the time victims notice the issue, it is usually too late. Operation Avalanche was designed to change that by alerting Canadians on the spot and providing them with tools to protect themselves before funds were drained.

The Results

Canadian authorities reported intercepting dozens of active scam operations and warning thousands of potential victims before significant losses occurred. The operation is being held up as a model for proactive law enforcement engagement with crypto fraud — moving beyond after-the-fact investigations toward real-time intervention. Victims of crypto scams in Canada are encouraged to report incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).
