Actress Connie Ferguson's Name Used in Forex Scams, Victim Defrauded of R800K

South African actress and businesswoman Connie Ferguson has again become the target of scammers, as fraudsters used her image and name to defraud a woman of R800,000. The victim, Matokgo Elizabeth Makutoane, claimed that forex traders used a Facebook account bearing Connie's photo as a profile picture to lure her into investing.

How the Scam Unfolded

After being introduced to a supposed representative of America Options Trade (AOT), Makutoane was promised returns of R10 million on an initial R100,000 investment. Contact was first made on Facebook, before the scammer moved the conversation to WhatsApp. Through ongoing messaging, they convinced her to send thousands of dollars — eventually demanding $47,000 (approximately R860K) for a card that would supposedly allow her to withdraw her profits.

The Aftermath

Makutoane applied for bank loans to meet the fraudsters' demands, illustrating the devastating financial and personal impact of celebrity impersonation scams. The Johannesburg High Court subsequently granted an urgent interdict. The case highlights a common pattern: scammers use celebrities' images without consent to add credibility to investment fraud, particularly targeting those unfamiliar with regulated financial products. Always verify investment opportunities through official channels before sending any money.
